Jogging Stroller vs Regular Stroller

– the complete jogging stroller vs regular stroller review!

The main difference between jogging strollers and regular strollers is that jogging strollers are mainly designed for jogging and long hikes on rough unpaved roads. While regular strollers are mainly designed for everyday use like trips to the mall, walks on the sidewalk, etc.

Jogging strollers usually have 3-wheels while regular strollers have 4-wheels. The 3-wheels help with easier maneuvering and are usually air-filled which makes them suitable for withstanding any terrain when you go for a jog or for a long hike.

This article tells you all you need to know about jogging strollers and regular strollers in terms of wheels, design and features!

Jogging Stroller vs Regular Stroller – Price

In terms of price, jogging strollers are usually more expensive than regular strollers. With regular strollers, the prices usually go as low as $50 if you want something really cheap. And up to $150, if you want a really good quality stroller.

But for a jogging stroller, the price starts from an average of $150 for a really cheap one. And for a good quality one, you can expect to pay at least $300.

Note: Some high quality regular strollers, can go up to $600 and the luxury style ones can cost up to $1000 and more.

Jogging Stroller vs Regular Stroller – Wheels

The main thing that differentiates jogging strollers from regular strollers are the wheels.

All jogging strollers have air-filled, all-terrain wheels that let you go over any terrain – grass, gravel, snow, unpaved roads, wood chip paths and even beach sand. Regular strollers on the other hand have plastic or foam filled tires that are not always great on all terrains. Only luxury style regular strollers designed specifically with all-terrain wheels can be used for all-terrain.

Jogging strollers also have only 3-wheels while most regular strollers have 4-wheels.

3-Wheel Stroller

4-Wheel Stroller

The 3-wheels make them easier to maneuver and also for making sharp turns while you run. And they also have a lockable swiveling front wheel feature that helps to improve maneuverability.  This feature is however, not always available with most regular strollers.

Lastly, all jogging strollers have a 3-wheel suspension system that prevents your stroller from jiggling about while you move. This is important for a jogging stroller as you and your baby would have a pretty uncomfortable run if the stroller keeps jiggling all the way. On the other hand, not all regular strollers have this feature, especially the really cheap ones. You’d have to pay attention to make sure you pick a stroller that has one.

Jogging Stroller vs Regular Stroller – Features

Next, in terms of stroller features, here is a review of what to expect with jogging strollers vs regular strollers.

Car Seat Compatibility: In terms of car seat compatibility, most jogging strollers and regular strollers are car seat compatible. You can either attach a car seat directly to the stroller frames or you can use a car seat adapter to attach the car seat.

For example, the BOB Revolution Flex jogging stroller is car seat compatible using a car seat adapter. And most regular strollers by brands like Graco, Chicco and Britax are also car seat compatible.

Note: Most lightweight regular strollers are not car seat compatible. They are designed to be really lightweight so excluding the car seat feature helps them maintain their lightweight.

Carrycot Compatibility: The carrycot feature is found mostly with regular strollers. They give you the option to attach a nice carrycot/bassinet to the stroller frame as an alternative to using a car seat.

Jogging strollers on the other hand do not have this feature. The only exception however, is the Thule Urban Glide stroller.

Thule Urban Glide Bassinet

It is currently the only jogging stroller that gives you the option to attach a carrycot/bassinet to the stroller frame.

Newborn Stroller: A lot of regular strollers can be used for newborns either by using the seat directly or by attaching a car or a bassinet. An example is bassinet style strollers which are regular strollers that allow you to use the stroller seat directly for newborns. A lot of other car seat compatible or carrycot compatible regular strollers can be used for newborns.

Jogging strollers on the other hand can also be used for newborns but only with the use of a car seat. There are no bassinet style jogging strollers that allow you to directly use the stroller seat for a newborn. You can only carry a newborn aboard a jogging stroller using a car seat or a carrycot(only the Thule Urban Glide).

Multi-Position Recline: Most regular strollers and jogging strollers have a multi-position recline feature. The BOB Revolution Flex and the Baby Trend Expedition jogger both have a multi-position recline that allows you to adjust the stroller seat into different positions. You can have your kid sitting upright or laying back for a nap.

3-5 Point Harness: For safety reasons, all strollers need to have a harness to keep your child safely strapped to the stroller seat. Good quality regular and jogging strollers have a 5-point harness which is the best type for keeping your child safely strapped in.

Reversible Seat: This feature allows you to adjust your stroller seat to be either forward facing or backwards facings – towards you. A lot of regular strollers have this feature; especially luxury style strollers.

This feature is however, not available for jogging strollers. The seats for jogging strollers are usually fixed in a forward facing position.

Dimensions: In terms of dimensions, jogging strollers are usually more bulky than regular strollers. This is the reason why some parents do not feel comfortable using a jogging stroller for everyday use. They are very easy to maneuver but they are also heavier and would take a lot of room if you need to store one in your car or carry it with you for your day to day activities.

Stroller Fold: Both jogging strollers and regular strollers have a fold feature that lets you fold them up – some easier than others. However jogging strollers are more bulky so the fold is less compact and would need more room to store.

Note: there are also really bulky regular strollers. Just depends on the type you choose.

Jogging Stroller vs Regular Stroller – Canopy

Both jogging strollers and regular strollers have large or small canopies depending on the type of stroller and quality. For most good quality jogging strollers like the BOB Revolution Flex and Joovy Zoom Ultralight stroller, you get a nice large canopy. And with regular lightweight strollers, you get a much smaller canopy.

So, depending on the type of stroller and the quality you can get a large or small canopy for both stroller types.

Note: some high quality jogging and regular strollers also have UPF50 sun-proof canopies. They help to protect you kid against harmful UV rays if you’re spending a lot of time outside.

Jogging Stroller vs Regular Stroller – Weight

In terms of weight, jogging strollers usually weigh more than regular strollers. You can have lightweight strollers weighing as little as 12 lbs. But the lowest weight for a jogging stroller is around 25 lbs – the Joovy Zoom Ultralight stroller. While most jogging strollers weigh close to 30 lbs.

Jogging Stroller vs Regular Stroller – 2 Kids

There are double stroller options for both jogging strollers and regular strollers. Jogging double strollers are usually side-by-side while regular double strollers are either tandem style or also side-by-side.

The BOB Revolution Duallie and the Baby Jogger Expedition double stroller are one of the top double jogging strollers available.

Jogging Strollers vs Regular Strollers – Brands

Lastly, in terms of stroller brands, there are different ones for both jogging strollers and regular strollers. The brands – BOB Gear, Thule, Bumbleride focus only on developing jogging strollers. And they are also the top brands to look out for if searching for a jogging stroller.

And for regular strollers, there are way more brands to look out for – Chicco, Britax, Graco, *Baby Jogger, Baby Trend, Uppababy, Nuna, Bugaboo.
